Martial Arts are literally “the Arts of Mars,” the Roman God of war, and throughout the centuries Europe has been home to a complex martial culture, from antiquity through the Middle Ages and Renaissance to the present day. Italy’s martial arts heritage is especially rich, and Northwest Fencing Academy is a school dedicated to the practice of Traditional Italian Swordplay and Martial Arts. Founded in 1997, the Academy provides professional instruction and training programs in the medieval art of Longsword, Polearms, Grappling, and Dagger (collectively known as Armizare), the elegant SideSword of the Renaissance, and the deadly 19th century Dueling Sabre. We employ the traditional European apprenticeship model, modern physical education practices, and careful research and scholarship of historical martial arts in a comprehensive, balanced curriculum. THE ART OF MEDIEVAL COMBAT
8 WEEKS STARTING May 14
Tuesdays 7:30 - 9:00 pm - This two-handed sword was wielded with sophistication and finesse by knights and nobles, and was the central weapon of Armizare, the medieval Italian Art of Arms. Armizare was taught by Maestro d’armi Fiore dei Liberi in the late 14th century. His four illustrated manuscripts – medieval martial arts “how-to” books – teach the techniques, tactics and strategy of longsword, poleaxe, spear, dagger, and hand-to-hand fighting. Much more than a “brute force” weapon, you’ll learn subtle and sophisticated ways to out-think your opponent, and even use their own strength against them. It’s chess with steel!

THE ART OF the 19th century duel
8 WEEKS STARTING May 13
Mondays 7:30 - 9:00 pm -Sabre and Sword area combat sport based on the dueling practices of 19th century Europe; they continue today in modified form as Olympic sports. During the tumultuous 19th century in Italy, political problems were often taken to the dueling ground, a tradition based on knightly combats of earlier centuries. The weapons of choice were the dueling sabre or dueling sword: elegant weapons employed with skill and precision. We teach Italian dueling sabre & sword as it was taught then, and we have a direct lineage, teacher to student, to the great Italian masters of the 19th century. It’s a serious art, but the enjoyment of training and testing skills with others is unmatched!
THE ART OF RENAISSANCE COMBAT
8 WEEKS STARTING May 15
Wednesdays 7:30 - 9:00 pm - The Italian Renaissance produced stunning works of art that defined perceptions of beauty and skill for centuries to come, and the Art of Swordplay was no exception. Sprezzatura – an Italian word that means “doing difficult things with effortless grace” – became the hallmark of the elegant, flowing and deadly 16th Century Italian Sidesword. Considered a necessary exercise for a person of culture as well as a required martial skill for self defense, it remains one of the most beautiful and effective forms of swordplay today. We employ the art as it was employed then – a beautiful, elegant and refined style of fighting. Join us and in a few weeks we'll have you fighting in style!
youth longsword & armizare:
8 Weeks starting May 14
Tuesdays 6:00 - 7:30 pm - Our Armizare program specially designed for ages 12 - 15! This class is nearly identical to our adult Armizare program in which students learn the Historical European Martial Art which was written down by Fiore di Liberi, a 14th century mercenary captain! Students will learn the Sword, Spear, and Dagger, as well as the necessary basics of wrestling. This class is meant for young adults to learn in a safe, age appropriate setting. Youths will learn how to fence with the longsword as it was done in the day. They'll build strength and coordination along with their fencing skills!

Saturdays 11:00 - 11:50 am - This class is for history lovers who love to move, and learn to fight! Jousting, Archery, and Tournaments, are all blended with exciting history lessons that have been specially designed specifically for our program. Student will learn what it would have been like to live during the time of mighty Heros and Heroines, as they learn the art of combat!

You can either review your skills in the Introductory Classes (use either Option 1 or Option 2), or you could return to the Ongoing Classes (use Option 2).
Loose exercise clothes! We suggest sweat pants or similar, preferably in black. Leggings are fine, but all pants must extend below the knee (no shorts, please). T-shirts as free from distracting logos and words as possible are a good choice. A good pair of tennis shoes will round out your basic training wear.
